Telecel Ghana Raises Capital Investment by 60% to $1.4bn – Sam George

Telecel Ghana has increased its capital investment by 60% between 2023 and 2026, compared with the preceding four-year period, Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George has disclosed.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, September 7, the Minister said the increase reflects Telecel Ghana’s growing commitment to strengthening the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and improving network quality and coverage.

Investment Rises Towards $1.5bn

According to Mr Nartey George, capital investment in the company before the transition stood at approximately $893 million, compared with about $1.4 billion currently, with the figure moving towards $1.5 billion.

He said the significant increase demonstrates the company’s commitment to investing more resources in its network infrastructure following its transition to Telecel Ghana.

2,900 Sites Being Upgraded

As part of the investment programme, Telecel Ghana is undertaking upgrades on approximately 2,900 network sites.

The upgrades involve the migration of network infrastructure from 3G to 4G, a move expected to expand access to faster mobile broadband services and improve network performance for customers.

Mr Nartey George said the upgrades form part of Telecel Ghana’s broader strategy to modernise its network infrastructure and strengthen service delivery nationwide.

Investment Critical to Digital Economy

The Minister described the growth in Telecel Ghana’s capital investment as evidence of the importance of sustained private-sector investment in Ghana’s telecommunications sector.

He said the increased investment demonstrates that the company is committing significantly more resources to network development than during the preceding period.

The development comes amid broader government efforts to strengthen Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure and create an environment that encourages operators to invest in network expansion and digital connectivity.

Mr Nartey George stressed that continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure is critical to the development of Ghana’s digital economy, noting that reliable and quality connectivity remains essential for businesses, households and public services.

With about 2,900 sites undergoing upgrades, Telecel Ghana’s investment is expected to further strengthen its 4G network footprint and improve the quality and availability of mobile connectivity for customers across the country.
