Tarkwa-Nsuaem Teachers Declare Strike Over Alleged Assault by Soldiers

Teachers in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality have declared industrial action following what they describe as authorities’ failure to respond to demands arising from the alleged assault of three teachers by military personnel at Adiewoso M/A Basic School.
The action follows a two-week ultimatum earlier issued by the Ghana National Association of Teachers after an April 30 incident during an anti-galamsey operation in Adiewoso.
According to the teacher unions, the affected teachers and a civilian were allegedly assaulted by soldiers despite identifying themselves and presenting their GNAT identity cards.
The unions say they are dissatisfied with the response from authorities regarding their demands for investigations, justice for the victims, and compensation for those affected.
As part of the protest, teachers across the municipality will begin wearing red armbands and embark on a sit-down strike starting Tuesday, May 26.
The unions further warned that a complete withdrawal of teaching and learning services will begin on June 1 if concrete steps are not taken to address the issue.
GNAT earlier described the alleged assault as “barbaric and inhumane” and called on the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of the Interior, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, and Ghana Education Service to investigate the matter and sanction those responsible.
The unions insist they will continue their planned actions until measures are taken to guarantee the safety and protection of teachers in the municipality.
