Tamale University Hospital Shut Down Over Filthy Conditions and Expired License

The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has slammed the doors shut on Tamale Technical University Hospital after uncovering shocking safety hazards and unhygienic practices.

A statement issued Monday, November 10, revealed that tip-offs—backed by photos and videos—exposed healthcare being delivered in dangerous, unsanitary conditions.

An inspection by HeFRA’s enforcement team on November 3 confirmed the mess and found the hospital had been running on an expired license, breaking the Health Institutions and Facilities Act of 2011.

The facility is barred from operating effective Friday, November 7, until every safety and infection-control issue is fixed.

On top of the closure, HeFRA slapped the hospital with a GHS35,000 fine and ordered it to renew its license before reopening.

Patients and staff have been told to clear out immediately as the cleanup and compliance process begins.
