Super Eagles Get New Boss! Éric Sékou Chelle Takes Charge with Eyes on 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially named Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

Chelle’s appointment follows a recommendation by the NFF Technical and Development Sub-Committee, which was later approved by the NFF Executive Committee. His wealth of experience in African football, combined with a successful track record, made him the ideal choice for the role.

A former coach of the Mali national team, Chelle guided Mali to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly losing to hosts Cote d’Ivoire. After stepping down as Mali’s head coach in June 2024, the 47-year-old French-Malian brings fresh energy and expertise to the Nigerian team.

Chelle has also managed several French clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, and Boulogne. During his playing career, he featured for prominent French clubs such as Martigues, Valenciennes, and Lens, earning a reputation as a skilled defender.

He replaces Jose Peseiro, who led the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before being succeeded by interim coach Finidi George. Chelle’s appointment is effective immediately, and he faces the critical task of leading the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His first test will come in March, as the Super Eagles prepare for their next round of World Cup qualifiers. Nigerian football fans will be eager to see how Chelle’s leadership shapes the team’s performance on the international stage.
