Strasbourg Tram Tragedy: 68 Injured in Rare Transport Disaster Near Central Station

In one of the most serious transport incidents in Strasbourg’s history, a tram accident near the city’s central train station has left 68 people injured. The crash, which occurred on Saturday, involved a stationary tram that was struck by another tram unexpectedly moving backward.

According to authorities, the moving tram had earlier stopped due to congestion but suddenly rolled downhill into the station, colliding violently with the stationary tram. The accident unfolded in a busy underground tunnel, creating a chaotic scene as emergency services rushed to assist.

Both trams were packed with passengers at the time of the crash. While around 100 passengers escaped unharmed, dozens suffered injuries ranging from cuts and fractures to trauma-related conditions. Witnesses described the collision as “alarming,” with the force of impact severely damaging both trams.

Local officials confirmed that the tram drivers were not physically injured but were left deeply shaken by the incident. Transport services at the station have been temporarily suspended as experts assess the damage and investigate the cause.

The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation, with early findings pointing to a possible mechanical failure. Officials have ruled out any deliberate act but continue to probe the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

Transport experts noted that such accidents are rare, especially in a densely populated area like Strasbourg. Efforts to repair the damage and restore services are ongoing, with local authorities emphasizing the need to ensure passenger safety moving forward.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in urban transportation systems.
