Stonebwoy Challenges Sarkodie Over ‘Principles’ Comment as Music Industry Tension Flares
Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has reignited tensions in Ghana’s music industry after responding to comments by rapper Sarkodie on artiste-fan relationships, online fan wars and the need for personal principles.
The development has sparked speculation of a fresh exchange between the two Ghanaian music heavyweights, following Sarkodie’s recent warning to artistes against encouraging fans who attack rival brands in an attempt to promote their preferred musicians.
Sarkodie advised artistes to be cautious about embracing such behaviour, arguing that some fans may engage in online rivalries mainly to gain attention and engagement.
“Just because a fan sh**s on another brand to elevate you doesn’t mean they love you more. Be careful about entertaining that energy,” Sarkodie said.
He also called on fanbases to move away from toxic rivalries and instead focus on supporting the artistes and brands they admire.
Stonebwoy Fires Back
Stonebwoy appeared to take issue with Sarkodie’s comments, initially responding with what seemed to be a subliminal message.
“Me and me dawg No Give a Fxxk About You.. Ganging Against The Torcher Can’t Hold!!!” Stonebwoy wrote.
The dancehall star later appeared to address Sarkodie more directly, explaining the events that led to his response.
Stonebwoy recalled personally reaching out to Sarkodie after his recent performance at the RAH in the United Kingdom to congratulate him. According to Stonebwoy, the two subsequently had a conversation that lasted more than 10 minutes.
Stonebwoy Recalls OVO Incident
Stonebwoy also referenced an incident following his own performance at OVO, claiming that Sarkodie shared a video on social media showing a man in crutches being kicked in the leg.
Stonebwoy said he felt the post was directed at him because of his history of leg problems following an accident.
Despite his concerns, Stonebwoy said he contacted Sarkodie to express his displeasure, after which the issue was discussed and addressed.
According to Stonebwoy, their conversation went beyond the incident and touched on broader issues concerning the music industry, artiste behaviour and their differing perspectives on how the industry should operate.
‘Practice What You Preach’
Stonebwoy suggested that Sarkodie’s position during their conversation, particularly his reported assertion that “no artiste could be forced to uphold any form of principle,” made him believe Sarkodie’s recent comments were directed at him.
He therefore urged the rapper to practise the principles he advocates publicly.
The exchange comes amid renewed online debates among sections of Ghana’s major artiste fanbases, with supporters continuing to argue over the achievements, influence and international reach of leading Ghanaian musicians.
While neither artiste has explicitly described the exchange as a full-blown feud, Stonebwoy’s latest remarks have added fresh fuel to speculation about tensions between the two music heavyweights.
