StarTimes Set to Make a Comeback as Ghana Premier League Broadcaster

Fans of the Ghana Premier League may soon enjoy enhanced coverage as Chinese-owned pay-TV operator StarTimes is on the verge of reclaiming its position as the league’s official broadcaster. Nana Sarfo Oduro, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), disclosed that negotiations with StarTimes are nearing completion.

StarTimes, which previously held the broadcast rights for the Ghana Premier League, has been absent from the league’s coverage due to an unresolved debt of nearly $1 million. However, Sarfo Oduro, speaking on Asempa FM, revealed that talks are progressing positively and that the deal could be finalized in time for the second round of the ongoing 2024/25 season.

“As I speak to you, we are almost closing up with StarTimes, and it is likely they will return in the second round to broadcast our games,” he stated.

The return of StarTimes is expected to rejuvenate the league’s media presence, providing fans with improved access to live matches and quality coverage. Additionally, the broadcaster is anticipated to take on the rights to air FA Cup games, further expanding its footprint in Ghanaian football.

The switch to free-to-air broadcasters earlier this season had drawn widespread criticism due to subpar production quality during the opening matchday. Many fans and stakeholders expressed disappointment with the viewing experience, underscoring the need for a reliable broadcasting partner.

The potential return of StarTimes offers renewed hope for the league, as the company’s advanced production capabilities promise to elevate the viewing experience and increase the league’s global visibility.
