Spiritual Preparation Essential for Referees, Says GFA Manager

GFA Referees Manager Alex Kotey has emphasized that referees need to prepare both spiritually and mentally when appointed to officiate games. He believes that such preparation is crucial for ensuring fair and well-conducted matches.

Amid controversies of alleged match-fixing at the end of the season, Kotey stressed the importance of spiritual readiness in guiding referees’ actions. Speaking to Asempa, he shared his personal practice of fasting before officiating, which he claims provides him with valuable insights.

“Every referee must prepare themselves spiritually and mentally,” Kotey stated. “I was born on a Thursday. If I am supposed to officiate a game, on the Thursday before the game, I fast. When I fast, I receive many revelations that guide me on what to do. If I am going to the game, I know I have to do this and that, and I will do it,” he explained.

He concluded by affirming that while the GFA will provide training on the laws of the game, spiritual preparation remains a personal responsibility.
