Spain Cracks Down on Racism: 4 Arrested for Online Hate Campaign Against Vinicius Jr
Spanish authorities have taken a significant step in combating racism in football by arresting four individuals for their alleged involvement in an online hate campaign targeting Real Madrid star forward, Vinicius Jr.
The arrests were made on October 14 and 15, and the investigation is ongoing, with the potential for further arrests. The online campaign, which used the hashtag #MetropolitanoConMascarilla, encouraged Atletico Madrid fans to wear face masks and hurl racial insults at Vinicius Jr during the September 29 Madrid derby.
Vinicius Jr has faced racial abuse at several matches, and last year, he called out LaLiga and Spain for being “racist” after experiencing slurs during a match at Valencia’s Mestalla stadium. In a landmark conviction, three Valencia football fans were sentenced to eight months in prison in June for hate crimes against Vinicius Jr.
LaLiga and Atletico Madrid have condemned the racist abuse, with LaLiga calling for the arrest of those involved in the hate campaign. Atletico Madrid has pledged to take internal disciplinary measures against associates involved in racist or intolerant incidents.
“The online campaign sparked significant social alarm, and we will continue to investigate,” said the Spanish National Police.
The investigation remains open, and a judge will determine if there’s enough evidence to proceed to trial. The arrested individuals have been released, but no statements have been made by their lawyers.
This move by Spanish authorities demonstrates a commitment to addressing racism in football and ensuring a safer, more inclusive environment for players and fans.
