Sophia Akuffo Stands Firm in Support of Removed Chief Justice Torkornoo

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo says she is not ashamed of defending Gertrude Torkornoo, the removed Chief Justice, during a committee hearing about her removal. In an interview with TV3 on September 2, 2025, Akuffo said she would defend Torkornoo again “any day, anytime, anywhere.”

Akuffo was upset that her name and others who supported Torkornoo were shared on social media, calling it unfair. She questioned why only those defending Torkornoo were criticized, while the names of those against her were kept secret. “Isn’t someone allowed to have witnesses?” she asked.

She also said Torkornoo’s removal has weakened Ghana’s judiciary and was handled unfairly, like a “treason trial.” Torkornoo was removed by President John Dramani Mahama on September 1, 2025, after a committee found evidence of misbehavior based on three petitions. The committee, led by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, included Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah. Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, before the final decision.
