So Sad: Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi Confirmed Dead

Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has sadly passed away. The news was confirmed on Monday, July 7, 2025, by Dr. Mahama Tiah Kabiru, the MP for Walewale. Kumi was 40 years old.

Kumi was a rising star in the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He won the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the 2024 general elections with 19,269 votes, beating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Henry Yiadom Boakye, who received 17,206 votes. He had previously secured the NPP nomination in 2023 by defeating the sitting MP, Ama Sey, in the party’s primary election.

Recent Legal Battles

His death comes just months after a lengthy legal dispute over his right to serve as an MP. In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found him guilty of contempt for ignoring a court order that prevented him from being sworn into Parliament. An arrest warrant was issued when he failed to appear for sentencing.

However, in June 2025, the Supreme Court overturned his conviction with a 4–1 majority decision. The court ruled that the initial judgment was influenced by judicial bias. This decision cleared the way for him to fully return to his parliamentary duties.

Background and Parliamentary Service

Before entering politics, Ernest Kumi had a strong academic and professional background. He earned an MSc in Defence and International Politics from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (2022), an MBA in Corporate Governance from the University of Professional Studies (2014), an LLB from Mountcrest University College (2019), and a BSc in Ports and Shipping Administration from Regional Maritime University (2009).

In Parliament, he served on both the Lands and Natural Resources Committee and the House Committee.

The details surrounding his death have not yet been released.
