SNNIT GICEL ESTATE RESIDENTS EXPOSED TO OPEN DEFECATION AS MANAGEMENT ALLEGEDLY SELLS OFF TOILET FACILITIES
A serious sanitation issue has emerged at SNNIT Gicel Estate in the Weija Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region following the alleged management’s decision to sell off most public toilet facilities and convert them into shops.
Without access to proper restroom facilities, many residents and visitors have been left with no choice but to defecate in plastic bags and discard them around the estate, while others are using mini gutters as open toilets.
This unsanitary practice, referred to as “shit and throw,” has become an unfortunate reality for the community, leading to an outcry from local business owners who now have to endure the stench and mess surrounding their shops.
According to these business owners, every morning they find waste near their doorsteps and must clean up before they can even open for business.
They are raising alarms and appealing to the management of Gicel Estate to stop the sale of the estate’s toilet facilities warning that the situation has already resulted in health and environmental hazards, affecting not only business operations but also the well-being of residents and customers.
During a media interview, the organizer speaking on behalf of the executives Mr. Samuel Boateng, called on SNNIT to intervene and halt the sale of the toilets, which he claims has put the entire community at risk.
He emphasized that their businesses are suffering and that they are at risk of disease due to the lack of proper restroom facilities.
He demanded that the estate management reinstate the public toilets or, at the very least, provide an alternative solution.
