Six Islamic SHS Students Arrested for Allegedly Stoning Kumasi High School Students at Ashanti Regional Super Zonals

Six students from Islamic Senior High School have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service for allegedly stoning students from Kumasi High School during the ongoing Ashanti Regional Super Zonals athletics event at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The incident occurred amid heightened security measures at the multi-day competition, which brings together schools from across the region. Speaking to Citi News in Kumasi, Samuel Otto, Chief Coordinator and Public Relations Officer for the Ashanti Regional Sports Federation, confirmed the arrests and provided details on the security response.
“As we said yesterday, the police were more active. They arrested six Islamic SHS students who were stoning others and in the course of that, the BNI people got in and quickly rushed in, and the police arrested them,” Mr. Otto stated.
He added that additional arrests were made of individuals suspected of attempting to steal students’ belongings while watching the event. Those suspects have been taken to the Asokwa Police Station for further processing.
Mr. Otto assured the public that the event remains under tight control and is progressing smoothly despite the isolated disturbances.
“Things went on well yesterday and we are expecting the same thing today and we hope to have a successful event,” he said.
The arrests follow a broader effort by police and security personnel to maintain order at the venue, including visible patrols and rapid intervention teams. The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has seen large crowds throughout the Super Zonals, making crowd control and spectator safety a top priority.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ashanti Regional Sports Federation have not yet issued a detailed official statement on disciplinary measures against the involved students or schools. However, sources indicate that both institutions are cooperating fully with the police investigation.
The incident has once again raised concerns about student discipline, rivalry management, and security planning at inter-school sporting events in Ghana. Authorities have reiterated that any form of violence or hooliganism will not be tolerated, with offenders facing both criminal and internal school sanctions.
The Super Zonals continue today and are expected to conclude without further major incidents, with organisers expressing confidence in the strengthened security presence. Updates on the legal status of the arrested students and any additional measures will be provided as investigations progress.
