Sammi Awuku Urges Government to Fix Power Outages Ahead of BECE Exams

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has made an urgent appeal to John Dramani Mahama to address ongoing nationwide power outages, warning of their impact on students preparing for major national examinations.
Speaking on the situation, Awuku expressed concern over the return of erratic electricity supply, describing it as worrying—particularly at a time when candidates are sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination and preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
The WASSCE began on April 21, 2026, while the BECE is scheduled to commence on May 4, 2026.
According to the MP, the unstable power supply is disrupting study routines and increasing anxiety among students.
“When lights go off in the middle of studying, it breaks concentration, slows learning, and in some cases creates unnecessary anxiety at a time when they need calm and focus the most,” he stated.
He stressed that these examinations are critical milestones in the academic journey of young Ghanaians, and students require a stable and supportive environment to perform at their best.
Awuku also highlighted the broader economic impact, noting that businesses, entrepreneurs, and small-scale operators are equally affected by the persistent outages.
He therefore called on the government and the Energy Ministry to act swiftly to stabilise the power supply.
“At the very least, let’s ensure our students are given a fair and stable environment to prepare for and write their exams. The government cannot turn its back on these young ones at this time. Their future really matters,” he appealed.
His comments come amid increasing public concern over power reliability, with many Ghanaians calling for urgent solutions to prevent further disruption across key sectors
