Sammi Awuku Slams NDC’s ‘Dumsor Levy’ and Tax Hikes, Accuses Mahama of Betraying Ghanaians

Former National Lottery Authority boss and prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure, Hon. Sammi Awuku, has fiercely criticized the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration for imposing a new fuel tax, dubbed the “Dumsor Levy,” and escalating utility price hikes.
In a scathing Facebook post on July 16, 2025, Awuku described the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025, which adds a GH¢1 tax per litre of fuel, as a “Death Levy” or “Disrespect Levy,” arguing it burdens all Ghanaians, unlike the NPP’s E-Levy, which applied only to mobile money transactions above GH¢100.
Awuku highlighted recent utility increases, noting a 14.75% electricity tariff hike and a 4.02% water tariff rise in May 2025, followed by an additional 2.45% electricity increase on July 16, totaling 17.2% in under three months.
He contrasted this with the NPP’s 2024 record, which saw less than an 11% annual increase and a 6.65% reduction for lifeline electricity users. He also pointed to fuel price hikes of 2% for petrol and 5% for diesel since July 2, based on COMAC projections.
Mocking the NDC’s cost-cutting claims Sparse, Awuku suggested the government should close its private fuel pump at the presidency and questioned the growing number of government appointees.
He concluded sarcastically, “We traded our flat screen TV for a black and white box,” lamenting the return to power cuts and economic hardship under the NDC. The post reflects growing public frustration with the Mahama administration’s fiscal policies.
