Sadio Mané Condemns CAF Decision to Strip Senegal of 2025 Afcon Title, Cites Corruption in African Football

Liverpool and Senegal superstar Sadio Mané has strongly condemned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for stripping Senegal of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, describing the move as a clear symbol of the deep-rooted corruption plaguing African football.

Senegal had defeated Morocco 1-0 in extra time in a dramatic final on January 18, 2026, to successfully defend their continental crown. However, months later, CAF’s Appeals Committee voided the victory after ruling that Senegal’s 17-minute walk-off protest — triggered by a controversial stoppage-time penalty awarded to Morocco — constituted a forfeiture under Article 82 of the competition’s regulations.

As a result, the final was awarded to Morocco by a 3-0 scoreline, handing the Atlas Lions their first Afcon title in 50 years.

In a strongly worded public statement, Mané expressed deep outrage and disappointment at the decision:

“What happened has gone too far,” Mané said. “This is not the football we fight for, not the Africa we believe in. There is too much corruption in our game, and it’s killing the passion of millions of fans across the continent.”

The former Liverpool forward, who played a pivotal role in Senegal’s 2021 and 2025 Afcon campaigns, argued that the ruling undermines the integrity of the competition and disrespects the efforts of players and fans who invested emotionally in the tournament.

The controversy has sparked widespread debate across Africa, with many Senegalese supporters and football stakeholders accusing CAF of bias and poor governance. Critics argue that the penalty decision itself was questionable and that the subsequent punishment was disproportionately harsh.

CAF has so far maintained its position, insisting that the rules were applied consistently and that walking off the pitch without referee authorisation cannot be tolerated.

As the dust continues to settle, Mané’s outspoken criticism has amplified calls for greater transparency and reform within African football’s governing body. The incident has further damaged CAF’s already fragile reputation among fans and players on the continent.

The 2025 Afcon title now officially belongs to Morocco, while Senegal has been left to reflect on what many consider one of the most controversial decisions in the tournament’s modern history.
