Revive Ghana Sports: Former Deputy Minister Calls for Comprehensive Reset
Former Deputy Sports Minister Vincent Oppong Asamoah has urged a comprehensive reset of Ghana’s sports sector to reverse the decline of football and restore its dominance in Africa and on the global stage.
Speaking to Happy Sports, Mr. Oppong Asamoah highlighted those revamping sports is just as crucial as addressing the economic challenges facing the country to secure a brighter future for Ghanaian football.
Long-Term Planning Essential for Sports Revival
Acknowledging the significant challenges involved, Oppong Asamoah emphasized the need for long-term planning and a commitment to correcting past mistakes.
“We must not just reset Ghana’s economy but the sports and other sectors as well. Let’s reflect and correct the things we have done wrongly in the past. It will take a while, but the results will manifest,” he stated.
Learning From Success Stories
The former Deputy Sports Minister suggested that Ghana should draw lessons from countries excelling in sports by adopting and implementing successful initiatives tailored to the local context.
“You will agree with me that sports in Ghana are on the decline. There are some countries doing well, and we must look at them and copy what will work for us. We need to go back and find out what went wrong,” he added.
Urgent Reforms Needed Amid Black Stars’ Decline
The call for a reset comes amid growing concerns about the state of Ghanaian football, which has struggled over the past decade. The recent failure of the Black Stars to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has further intensified discussions about the urgent need for reforms in the sports sector.
By adopting innovative strategies and addressing systemic issues, stakeholders believe Ghana can revive its football legacy and inspire the next generation of athletes to shine on both African and global stages.
