Rawlings Foundation demands urgent action from Speaker over MP’s derogatory comment

The J.J. Rawlings Foundation is calling for an investigation into some pretty harsh comments made by a Member of Parliament against the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and his daughter, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings. The foundation’s executive director, Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, described the comments as “toxic and untruthful” and said they were an attack on the entire country.

According to the foundation, the remarks undermined President Rawlings’ legacy and discredited Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ work as a three-term opposition MP. The foundation also criticized the way Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings was addressed in Parliament, calling it disrespectful and an attack on women in public service.

The foundation’s petition to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, highlighted President Rawlings’ instrumental role in nurturing Ghana’s current political dispensation and his commitment to participatory leadership and anti-corruption.

It also noted Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ effectiveness as an MP and her achievements in holding onto her seat despite being an opposition member.

The petition called for the offending MP to acknowledge responsibility and retract their defamatory remark, which was deemed “inflammatory, despicable, unconscionable and disgraceful”.

This incident has sparked outrage, with the Anlo Kingdom’s traditional rulers also petitioning the Speaker over the matter.
