Railway Workers Issue Ultimatum to Government – Demand Full Payment of Over One Year’s Outstanding Salaries by March 31

Railway workers across Ghana have given the government a firm deadline of Tuesday, March 31, 2026, to pay all outstanding salaries that have been pending for more than one year.

The Railway Workers Union of Ghana issued the ultimatum during a press conference on Wednesday, March 25, where General Secretary Benjamin Essuman expressed deep frustration on behalf of the workers.

“We cannot continue to wait while our members go without the pay they have rightfully earned,” Essuman said. “Our patience has worn thin, and if the government fails to meet this deadline, the union will take further action.”

The union’s members have reportedly gone for over 12 months without receiving their full salaries, causing severe financial hardship for many workers and their families.

The latest ultimatum follows earlier complaints and protests by the union. Workers say the prolonged delay has made it extremely difficult to meet basic needs such as rent, school fees, food, and medical expenses.

Essuman warned that failure by the government to clear the arrears by the end of the month would force the union to resort to stronger measures, including possible industrial action.

The picketing and protests signal rising discontent among railway employees, who play a critical role in Ghana’s transportation and logistics sector.

As of now, the government has not issued any public response to the union’s demands or the March 31 deadline.

The situation is being closely watched, as any escalation could disrupt rail services across the country.
