The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have announced an eight percent upward adjustment in public transport fares, effective Saturday, 26 September 2026.
The decision follows extensive consultations between the Ministry of Transport and commercial road transport operators held over the period 8 to 22 September 2026.
According to a joint press release signed by the General Secretaries of both bodies, the revised fares will apply to shared taxis, intra-city (tro-tro) services, intercity (long-distance) services and haulage.
In arriving at the decision, the parties took into account changes in the ex-pump prices of petroleum products, spare parts, general vehicle maintenance and other operational inputs, weighed against the plight of drivers, commuters and the travelling public.
The unions expressed appreciation to the Minister for Transport and all stakeholders for the constructive manner in which the negotiations were conducted. They noted that the government’s intervention on the price of diesel materially moderated the extent of the adjustment.
The eight percent increment is calculated on the approved transport fares that took effect on 24 May 2025. Detailed schedules of the revised fares for shared taxis, intra-city and intercity services have been released and will serve as the reference point for operators, commuters and the general public.
All commercial transport operators have been requested to comply strictly with the approved fares and to display the rates conspicuously at loading terminals and stations. Transport operators have been further reminded that charging fares in excess of the approved rates will attract appropriate sanctions from the unions.
Leadership of the transport operators reaffirmed its commitment to continue engaging government and all relevant stakeholders in the collective interest of the road transport industry and the motoring public.
