Protesters Storm Ex-President Buhari’s Residence in Daura, Demand End to Bad Governance
On Thursday, a group of angry protesters gathered at the residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, as part of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.
The protesters, who were chanting anti-government songs and setting up bonfires, attempted to break into the former president’s residence. According to eyewitnesses, the protesters were shouting “Bama yi! Bama yi! Bama yi!” which translates to “we don’t want” in Hausa, a phrase used to express disapproval.
The situation was brought under control when an unidentified person from Buhari’s residence addressed the crowd and offered to record their grievances and present them to the former president.
The protesters then proceeded to the palace of the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar Farouk, where one of them was shot in the leg by security operatives attempting to disperse the crowd. Despite this, the protesters refused to back down.
The demonstrations also affected other locations in Daura, including the residence of Alhaji Musa Uba, the Magajin Gari, which suffered minor damages after protesters threw stones at the building. However, the situation was eventually contained by security operatives. As of now, the situation in Daura is calm, with the palace of the Emir being guarded by the army and police.
