President Mahama Approves Two-Year Extension for IGP Yohuno Amid Reforms Push

President John Dramani Mahama has given the green light for a two-year contract extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, effective December 28, 2025, following a recommendation from the Police Council.

In a formal letter dated November 25, signed by Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, the extension was described as crucial for maintaining momentum in police reforms, boosting operational efficiency, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service.

The IGP, who turns statutory retirement age in December 2025, will now serve until December 2027.

Key excerpts from the letter:

“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama… has approved your re-engagement for an additional two (2) years.”

“Your re-engagement takes effect from 28th December, 2025. During this period, you shall continue to serve as the Inspector-General of Police and discharge the duties and responsibilities attached to the office.”

IGP Yohuno is urged to confirm acceptance in writing within three days.

Appointed IGP on March 13, 2025, after consultation with the Council of State, Yohuno was sworn in the following day, succeeding Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

A 40-year veteran, he previously served as Deputy IGP (Operations) under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, and held roles like Director-General of Operations, Police Intelligence, and Greater Accra Regional Commander.

The decision underscores the Mahama administration’s focus on continuity in law enforcement leadership amid ongoing security challenges.
