President Biden Announces Decision Not to Seek Reelection

Statement by Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

July 21, 2024

My Fellow Americans,

Over the past three and a half years, we have achieved remarkable progress as a nation.

Today, America stands with the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our nation, lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and expanding affordable healthcare to record numbers of Americans. We’ve provided critical care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances, passed significant gun safety legislation, and appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. Moreover, we’ve enacted the most significant climate legislation in global history. America is now more prepared than ever to lead the world.

None of this progress would have been possible without you, the American people. Together, we’ve overcome a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve safeguarded our democracy and strengthened our alliances worldwide.

Serving as your President has been the greatest honor of my life. While I had planned to seek reelection, I believe stepping aside is best for my party and our country. I will now focus exclusively on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term. I will provide further details about this decision in a national address later this week.

For now, I extend my deepest gratitude to all who worked tirelessly for my reelection. I thank Vice President Kamala Harris for her exceptional partnership. And to the American people, I am profoundly grateful for your faith and trust.

I continue to believe in the limitless potential of America when we stand united. We are the United States of America, and together, there is nothing we cannot achieve.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Biden, Jr.
