President Akufo-Addo Condemns ‘Agyapadie’ Document as Fabricated

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reacted to a document spreading on social media, accusing some New Patriotic Party members of conspiring to annex state assets. The paper, dubbed “Agyapadie,” had on its first page a photograph of Okyenhene with content claiming that certain persons from Akyem would take over state assets.

At the just-ended Ghana Report Summit in Accra, President Akufo-Addo went into a tirade against his opponents, labeling the document as entirely fabricated and without a basis, which was all part of the malice tactics his opponents were using to discredit his character and political career. This document, he said, only added weight to the fact that circulation by opposition operatives was the farthest they could go in discrediting their opponents.

He said similar false accusations against him and former President Kufuor had been made, which ranged from drug trafficking to health issues down to selling the country’s gold reserves. He emphasized that such misinformation and disinformation should guard against falling prey, especially as the 2024 general elections draw near.

President Akufo-Addo, therefore, called for a multi-faceted approach to fighting misinformation: strengthening regulatory frameworks, working with technology companies, and promoting truthfulness and transparency in political campaigning. The President thus implored political actors to engage in constructive dialogue and present ideas and policies in a truthful and respectful way.
