Police Intelligence Operation Leads to Arrest of Suspects in Berekum Chelsea Bus Attack

A coordinated intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service has resulted in the arrest of two key suspects linked to the deadly robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus.
The arrests follow the April 12 ambush along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road, which claimed the life of footballer Dominic Frimpong.
Intelligence-led manhunt
Acting on directives from the Inspector-General of Police, a special task force comprising officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate, Anti-Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters, and regional commands launched a targeted operation using surveillance and intelligence gathering.
Their efforts led them to Atimatim in Kumasi, where the suspects were located on April 15.
Arrest and confrontation
Police identified the suspects as:
Mohammed Ahmed (also known as “I Can Do”)
Bawa Gideon
According to police, the operation turned confrontational when the suspects attempted to flee and allegedly opened fire on officers. The police returned fire, subdued them, and effected their arrest.
Items retrieved
A search conducted after the arrest uncovered several items believed to be linked to their activities, including:
A pistol loaded with two rounds of ammunition
BB cartridges and pepper spray
A locally manufactured firearm
Desert boots, mobile phones, and a black pullover
Ongoing investigations
During interrogation, Mohammed Ahmed reportedly confessed to involvement in multiple robbery incidents, including the attack on the team bus.
He is currently receiving treatment under police guard at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while Bawa Gideon remains in custody assisting with investigations.
Police say the operation is part of a broader effort to dismantle the robbery network, with three additional suspects still on the run as the manhunt continues.
