Police Arrest Suspect in Kasoa Polling Centre Shooting During 2024 Elections

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect linked to the shooting incident at the Odupongkpehe Polling Centre in Kasoa during the 2024 general elections.
The suspect, Mujahid Suraj, also known as Mims, went into hiding after allegedly firing a pump-action shotgun that injured a voter on election day.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to Citi News at the time reported that Suraj had targeted Tamimu Tanko, a constituency executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but missed and instead shot a man who had come to vote.
While some attributed the attack to political motives, others pointed to an existing personal feud between the suspect and Tamimu Tanko.
Suraj was apprehended on the night of Saturday, January 17, 2026, by the Kasoa Divisional Command following intelligence that he had returned to his residence at Odupongkpehe Zongo in Kasoa.
Sources within the police confirmed the arrest to Citi News, stating that the suspect is currently under investigation and will face prosecution in due course.
The arrest brings renewed hope for justice in a case that heightened tensions during the 2024 polls and raised serious concerns about electoral violence and personal security at polling stations. Investigations continue to establish full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
