Paul Afoko Announces Bid for NPP National Chairmanship, Pledges Unity Ahead of 2026 Congress

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Afoko has officially declared his candidacy for the party’s top leadership position at the upcoming National Delegates Congress, promising to unify the party and position it for a strong comeback in the 2028 general elections.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Afoko, who led the NPP from 2014 to 2015, called for an end to internal divisions and a renewed focus on grassroots mobilization. “The NPP stands at a pivotal crossroads,” he said. “We must heal factionalism, empower the youth, and restore public confidence through transparent and inclusive leadership.”

Afoko emphasized his experience in steering the party toward electoral success, citing reforms in grassroots organization and internal democracy during his tenure. He outlined a vision centered on digital innovation, youth engagement, and accountability, pledging to equip polling station executives with training and resources.

The announcement comes as the NPP prepares for its February 2026 National Delegates Congress, following regional executive elections later this year. Afoko’s entry adds to a growing list of contenders, including former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong and current Deputy General Secretary Haruna Esseku.

While Afoko retains strong support in the Northern and Upper regions, his 2015 suspension—stemming from internal disputes—remains a sensitive issue among some party elders. NPP insiders say his return could energize the base but risks reopening old divisions
