Otto Addo Stands Firm as Black Stars Coach Despite AFCON 2025 Failure
Ghana coach Otto Addo has reaffirmed his commitment to the Black Stars despite failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Angola and a shocking 2-1 loss to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, pressure has mounted for Addo to resign.
The defeat, marked by a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Niger, has sparked widespread criticism and calls for the coach to step down. However, Addo remains resolute in his position, expressing his determination to continue leading the team.
“I’m not the person who can resign. If I had done this, I’d never have become a player or even a coach,” Addo stated during a press conference. “If you know where I have come from as a person to arrive at this job, you won’t even ask about resignation. People shouting and telling me to resign can’t affect me.”
Adding to Ghana’s woes, former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah successfully guided Sudan to AFCON qualification at the expense of his home country.
Despite the setback, the Black Stars aim to regroup and refocus their efforts on the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Fans are hopeful the team can reclaim their glory and deliver better performances on the global stage.
