NPP’s Abronye DC on Hunger Strike in Custody, Lawyer Cites Political Persecution Fears

Kwame Baffoe, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) known as Abronye DC, has begun a hunger strike while in police custody, his lawyer Enoch Afoakwa confirmed.
The protest follows Abronye’s remand for two weeks by an Accra Circuit Court, which he and his supporters view as politically motivated persecution.
Speaking after the court session on Friday, September 12, Afoakwa explained that Abronye is refusing food and water due to safety concerns, fearing mistreatment akin to a treason charge. “Once you’re handled like you’ve committed treason, would you trust their food or water? He’s protecting his life under these circumstances,” Afoakwa said.
Afoakwa described Abronye as “full of life” and optimistic about regaining his freedom, framing the strike as a stand for democratic principles. “He’s pursuing this in furtherance of democracy,” the lawyer added.
Abronye was arrested on September 8 for “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace,” though details remain undisclosed.
The court extended his remand to allow further investigations, with his next appearance set for September 26.9a0ab8c779cd The case has sparked national outcry, linked to Abronye’s recent asylum bids in eight countries citing threats and government abuse of security forces.
NPP figures, including Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, have decried the detention as harassment, vowing retaliation when power shifts.
