A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Legal Team, Enoch Afoakwa, has reported an alleged assault by an Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) officer to the police following the attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
Mr Afoakwa said the incident occurred on Wednesday, 23 September, when EOCO officials attempted to arrest the legislator shortly after he had appeared at the High Court as legal counsel for Salomey Awitty Baffoe.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr Afoakwa said he formally reported the alleged assault to the police after the confrontation.
He said the police subsequently issued him with a medical form, which he presented at a hospital for examination and treatment.
“The lady punched me in my face. What did I do to have received that kind of a punch in my face? As a lawyer, I am looking at the options available, but once the incident happened, I made an official complaint to the police,” he said.
He added, “They have issued to me the police medical form and I have attended to the hospital for them to take care of me to observe and examine me. I will follow up and tender everything to the police and let the police decide what to do next.”
The alleged assault followed a confrontation between EOCO officials and persons resisting the attempted arrest of Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah on 23 September.
The MP had appeared in court as legal counsel for Salomey Awitty Baffoe before EOCO officials sought to take him into custody.
The incident has since generated public discussion about the conduct of law enforcement officers and the procedures governing arrests, particularly when they involve persons appearing in court in a legal capacity.
