NPP Flagbearer Election Underway in High-Stakes Presidential Primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is currently holding its presidential primaries today, Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Voting is ongoing nationwide, with more than 211,000 accredited delegates expected to cast their ballots in one of the largest and most consequential internal elections in the party’s history.

Polling is taking place across all 16 regions, at the national headquarters, and in selected diaspora centres under tight security and strict electoral guidelines.

The exercise follows months of intense campaigning, policy debates and regional tours by the aspirants. It is widely seen as a critical test of the NPP’s internal unity and readiness for the national contest.

Five aspirants are contesting:

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong

Dr Bryan Acheampong

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong

Party leaders have urged delegates and supporters to uphold discipline, unity and peaceful competition. They have warned against private security, vigilantes or any actions that could damage the credibility of the process.

Results are expected later today after voting ends and counting is completed at the various centres.

All eyes are on the NPP as it chooses the leader who will carry its flag into the 2028 elections.
