NPP Excludes National Security from Flagbearer Primary Over Fears of Intimidation

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has revealed that the party has deliberately excluded National Security operatives from its security arrangements for the upcoming presidential primary to prevent potential intimidation and interference.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Friday, January 30, 2026, he explained that the decision stems from intelligence suggesting the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) may attempt to disrupt the process, drawing from what he described as recent patterns of misuse of security personnel.

“We’ve picked up intelligence about certain happenings that the NDC want to perpetrate because of the peaceful nature of the elections we conducted in 2023. They were not very happy with that peaceful election. Now that they have control of national security, and the manner in which they have been using it to bulldoze their way into people’s houses—Ntim Fordjour is a clear example; Adenta Kumi, Abronye, and Wontumi are also clear examples,” he said.

He further alleged that some individuals posing as National Security operatives have been used to intimidate political opponents and create confusion.

“In some instances, some of them are not national security operatives; they are hoodlums of the NDC. They go in, cause mayhem, create confusion, and get away with it. We don’t want any non-uniformed security officer at the venues for the election of our presidential candidate,” he added.

According to him, the NPP strongly prefers the Ghana Police Service to take exclusive charge of security for the internal election scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The move, he emphasised, is intended to protect the integrity of the election, prevent intimidation, and ensure delegates can vote freely in a peaceful and transparent environment.

The NPP has maintained that its 2023 flagbearer primary was conducted peacefully and credibly, and it is determined to replicate the same standard in the current contest amid heightened political tensions.

The party has yet to receive any official response from the NDC or the National Security apparatus regarding the allegations. The primary remains on track, with all five aspirants actively campaigning across the country.
