Niger’s Stunning Win Over Sudan Rekindles Ghana’s Slim AFCON 2025 Qualification Hopes
Niger’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Sudan on Thursday has reignited Ghana’s slim hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite their winless record in Group F. Ghana, with just two points from four games, now faces a daunting path to secure a spot in Morocco.
The Black Stars must win their remaining two matches—against Angola and Niger—and rely on Sudan losing their final game to Angola. Meanwhile, Niger’s victory not only restored their qualification hopes but also added complexity to a group where Angola has already sealed qualification.
Niger dominated Sudan in Togo, with forward Daniel Sosah, who has Ghanaian roots, netting twice. Additional goals from Ousseini Badamassi and Youssef Oumarou secured the decisive win, throwing the group’s second qualification spot wide open.
Despite the heavy loss, Sudan still controls their fate and needs one point from their final match against Angola to secure qualification. The game will be played at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya, where Sudan enjoys strong fan support.
Ghana, however, faces an uphill battle. They must beat Angola Today evening and follow up with a win against Niger, all while counting on Angola to defeat Sudan. Niger also remains in contention but must defeat Ghana in their final game and hope Sudan falters.
Failure to qualify would mark Ghana’s first absence from AFCON since 2004, a prospect the team is determined to avoid. Despite the odds, coach Otto Addo and his players remain focused, ready to fight for an unlikely but possible qualification.
