NDC Secures Two-Thirds Majority in Parliament with Ablekuma North Win, Mahama Ayariga Hails Transformational Potential

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has achieved a two-thirds majority in Ghana’s Parliament, holding 184 of 275 seats, following the swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn as the new MP for Ablekuma North on July 22, 2025.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who administered the oath, celebrated the milestone, emphasizing the NDC’s strengthened position to drive significant constitutional reforms and national development.

The victory in Ablekuma North, secured after a rerun in 19 polling stations, bolsters the NDC’s legislative dominance, complemented by four independent MPs, while the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds 86 seats.

Ayariga underscored the party’s commitment to responsible governance, echoing President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge not to abuse the mandate. “With this number, we can carry out significant constitutional reforms to make this country better,” he stated, highlighting plans to amend Ghana’s 1992 Constitution for national renewal.

The NDC’s supermajority positions it to advance transformative legislation, with Ayariga assuring Ghanaians that the party will use its power wisely to benefit the nation.

This development marks a pivotal moment for the NDC to reset Ghana’s legislative and developmental agenda.
