NDC Revokes Membership of Umar Sanda for Running as Independent in Ayawaso East By-Election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that Mr Umar Sanda has automatically forfeited his membership in the party after deciding to contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election.

In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC stated that Sanda’s decision violates the party’s constitution and its collective choice to field a duly endorsed candidate for the March 3, 2026 by-election.

The party explained that by running against the officially endorsed NDC candidate, Sanda has lost his membership with immediate effect.

The letter further prohibits him from using the party’s name, logo, colours, symbols or any other intellectual property associated with the NDC in his campaign or related political activities.

The NDC urged Sanda to comply with the directive without delay.

The Ayawaso East by-election was triggered by the passing of the constituency’s former MP, with the NDC’s primary on February 7, 2026, selecting Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed as its candidate.

Sanda’s independent bid has sparked debate within political circles, with some viewing it as a potential split in the NDC’s voter base ahead of the March 3 poll.
