NDC Retains Ayawaso East Seat as Baba Jamal Wins Decisive By-Election Victory

The National Democratic Congress has held on to the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat after its candidate, Baba Jamal, secured a convincing win in Tuesday’s by-election.
According to official results announced by the Electoral Commission, voter turnout remained notably low across the constituency. Out of more than 40,000 registered voters, only 17,048 ballots were counted.
Baba Jamal polled 10,884 votes to comfortably defeat his closest challenger, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party, who received 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda came third with 1,885 votes, while Ibrahim Idrissu and Kanor David trailed far behind with 43 and 104 votes respectively.
The total valid votes cast stood at 16,928, with 120 rejected ballots.
The by-election was called to fill the vacancy created by the death of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January. Despite the low turnout, the poll proceeded peacefully, with electoral officials and security personnel present at all polling centres to ensure order throughout the day.
Baba Jamal’s victory marks his return to Parliament. He previously served as Member of Parliament for Akwatia and later represented Ghana as High Commissioner to Nigeria.
He is expected to be sworn in soon to take up his seat and continue the legislative work in Ayawaso East.
The result strengthens the NDC’s hold on the constituency and is being viewed as an important early test of political sentiment ahead of future elections.
