NDC Congratulates NPP on Peaceful Primaries, Welcomes Bawumia as 2028 Flagbearer

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally congratulated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the successful and violence-free conduct of its presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

In a statement issued following the announcement of results, the NDC commended the NPP for organising a credible, transparent and largely peaceful internal election that saw Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The NDC particularly praised the Ghana Police Service for the professional manner in which it secured the process nationwide, describing the security arrangements as effective and commendable.

The party also welcomed the concession statements and calls for unity issued by the unsuccessful aspirants — Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong — noting that such gestures help strengthen democratic culture.

“The NDC congratulates the NPP on a successful, violence-free presidential primary that has produced Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its candidate for the 2028 election. We commend the Ghana Police Service for the professionalism and effectiveness shown in securing the exercise across the country.”

“We equally welcome the mature concession statements and appeals for unity from the other aspirants. These actions reinforce the spirit of democracy and help build trust in our electoral processes,” the statement read.

The NDC reiterated its readiness to engage constructively with the NPP and all stakeholders to further strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions and ensure peaceful, credible elections in 2028.

“Democracy thrives when parties compete vigorously but respectfully, and when outcomes are accepted in good faith. We look forward to healthy competition in 2028 while continuing to work together wherever possible for the progress of our nation.”

The statement closes a day of intense political activity and signals the NDC’s intention to maintain a tone of responsible opposition as the country heads toward the next general election
