NCA Confirms Stakeholder Talks on DStv Pricing to Begin September 8

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced that stakeholder discussions with MultiChoice Ghana to review DStv subscription pricing will commence on Monday, September 8, 2025, following the company’s formal response to the NCA’s directive to engage in talks and evaluate its pricing model.
This development comes after a tense standoff with the government, led by Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, who threatened to shut down MultiChoice’s operations on September 6 if it failed to commit to price reductions.
In a press release dated September 7, 2025, the NCA clarified that MultiChoice Ghana has agreed to participate fully in the newly established Stakeholder Committee, which includes representatives from the Ministry, NCA, MultiChoice Ghana, and MultiChoice Africa, to assess DStv pricing. The committee’s first meeting will aim to address public and governmental concerns over high subscription costs, with outcomes to be determined upon conclusion of the review.
The announcement follows MultiChoice’s September 5 statement denying claims by the minister that it had agreed to slash prices, emphasizing instead its commitment to dialogue. The NCA’s statement highlighted three key points: MultiChoice’s agreement to form the committee, its pledge to respect Ghana’s laws and due process, and a promise to provide further updates. The move averts, for now, the minister’s threat of regulatory action, including potential license suspension and a GH¢10,000 daily fine for non-compliance with pricing data requests under the Electronic Communications Act.
The pricing dispute, fueled by public frustration over DStv’s high fees—reportedly $83 for the Premium package in Ghana compared to $29 in Nigeria—has drawn significant attention. The committee’s deliberations, expected to conclude within 14 days as mandated by the minister, will determine whether Ghanaians will see relief in subscription costs.
