Nana Agradaa’s 15-Year Sentence Reduced to 12 Months by Amasaman High Court

The Amasaman High Court has reduced the 15-year prison sentence imposed on controversial evangelist Nana Agradaa to 12 calendar months.

In its ruling delivered today, the court upheld her conviction but exercised its discretion to vary the original punishment, describing the 15-year term of hard labour as harsh and excessive in the circumstances.

The revised sentence takes effect from July 3, 2025 — the date of her initial conviction — meaning Nana Agradaa will serve a total of 12 months in prison.

The court held that while the offences she was convicted of clearly warranted punishment, the severity of the initial sentence was disproportionate, justifying the downward adjustment.

Nana Agradaa, formerly a fetish priestess and now an evangelist, was found guilty of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

The court established that in a 2022 televised broadcast, she falsely claimed to possess spiritual powers capable of doubling money. Several individuals were lured into handing over large sums of money in expectation of miraculous financial returns — promises that were never fulfilled.

The case had drawn significant public attention due to her high-profile persona and the scale of the alleged deception.

The reduction in sentence now brings finality to the matter after her conviction, though the case continues to fuel debate about the regulation of spiritual claims and consumer protection in Ghana.
