Nana Aba Anamoah Challenges Government’s Shift on LGBTQ+ Bill Priority

Ghana’s ongoing debate over the prioritisation of the LGBTQ+ bill has intensified, with media personality Nana Aba Anamoah strongly opposing the government’s position that more pressing national issues should take precedence.

The renewed discussion follows recent remarks by John Dramani Mahama, who indicated during an engagement with civil society groups that Ghana must first address urgent socio-economic challenges. This stance was reinforced by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who stated in an interview on JoyNews that LGBTQ+ matters are not a top priority for most citizens grappling with daily economic difficulties.

However, Nana Aba Anamoah has pushed back, questioning what she described as a contradiction in priorities. In a post shared on April 7, 2026, she argued that the issues now being described as urgent have always existed and should not be used to diminish the importance previously attached to the LGBTQ+ bill.

“The issues you’re calling priorities now have always been priorities,” she stated, adding that if the bill was not central to national interest, it should not have featured prominently in political campaigns.

She further suggested that the prominence given to the issue before the elections contrasts sharply with the current stance of government officials.

Her remarks have added fresh momentum to an already polarised national conversation, with opinions divided over whether the bill should be treated as an immediate priority or deferred in favour of economic and social concerns.

As the debate continues, questions about national priorities and policy direction remain at the forefront of public discourse in Ghana
