Muslims in Ghana Begin Ramadan: Month of Fasting, Reflection and Charity

Muslims across Ghana joined millions worldwide on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, in commencing Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam — a sacred period dedicated to fasting, spiritual reflection, prayer, self-discipline and increased acts of charity.

Following the lunar Islamic calendar, observant Muslims will abstain from food, drink, smoking and marital relations from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib) each day for the next 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the new moon.

Imams and community leaders have reminded worshippers that the true essence of Ramadan extends far beyond physical fasting.

“It is a time for self-purification, reflection on one’s actions, and giving back to those in need,” said Sheikh Imran, a prominent cleric in Madina.

“The fast teaches patience, empathy, and gratitude — values that benefit society as a whole.”

Preparations have been visible in markets and mosques, with families purchasing dates, fruits, water and other essentials for the daily breaking of the fast (iftar). Mosques have organised nightly Taraweeh prayers, Quranic recitations and lectures, drawing large congregations while observing health and safety guidelines.

Ramadan also strengthens family and community bonds in Ghana. Many households share iftar meals with relatives, friends and neighbours, while charity drives — including food distributions, donations to orphans, widows and the needy — are widespread.

The month serves as an annual reminder of social responsibility, empathy for the less fortunate, and gratitude for blessings.

As the sun sets each evening, the call to Maghrib prayer signals the joyful moment of breaking the fast, often beginning with dates and water in keeping with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Muslims in Ghana wish one another “Ramadan Mubarak” (Blessed Ramadan) or “Ramadan Kareem” (Generous Ramadan) as the sacred month unfolds.
