Mohammed Salisu Suffers Season-Ending ACL Injury, World Cup Hopes in Doubt

AS Monaco defender Mohammed Salisu is expected to miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a serious knee injury during his side’s 3–1 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais at the Stade Louis II on Saturday, January 3.
Monaco confirmed on Monday that the Ghana international suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, casting major doubt over his immediate future and potential involvement in the upcoming World Cup.
The setback adds to Monaco’s growing injury concerns, marking the second consecutive match in which a player from the club has suffered an ACL injury.
Prior to the injury, Salisu had firmly established himself in the starting line-up, delivering assured performances in the absence of Soungoutou Magassa Mawissa and experienced defender Eric Dier. His displays brought much-needed stability to Monaco’s defence and highlighted his increasing importance to the team.
The injury is also a significant blow for Ghana. The 25-year-old has been a key component of the Black Stars’ backline, forming a solid central defensive partnership with Alexander Djiku. In addition to his defensive contributions, Salisu has shown an eye for goal, notably scoring in Ghana’s memorable win over South Korea at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
This season, Salisu featured in 12 matches across all competitions, scoring once.
Meanwhile, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his final squad for the tournament on June 1, with Salisu’s availability now in serious doubt.
