Mobile Money Transactions Hit Record GH¢518.4 Billion in December 2025 – BoG Data

Mobile money (MoMo) transactions in Ghana soared to an all-time high of GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, according to the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The figure marks the highest monthly value ever recorded in 2025 and reflects the deepening adoption of digital payments, boosted by increased consumer spending during the festive season and the continued expansion of mobile money services across the country.
Key highlights from the BoG report include:

Transaction volumes climbed to 982 million in December, up from 892 million in November, showing stronger everyday usage.

Active mobile money accounts grew to 26.7 million (from 25.5 million the previous month), while registered accounts reached 80.5 million — clear evidence of continued progress in financial inclusion.

The mobile money agent network expanded to 491,000 active agents by the end of December, significantly improving access to cash-in and cash-out services nationwide.
Balances held in mobile money wallets hit a yearly peak of GH¢39.6 billion, indicating growing trust in mobile wallets as a secure store of value.

Interoperable mobile money transactions (cross-network transfers) rose sharply to GH¢5.8 billion in December, up from GH¢4.9 billion in November — a clear sign of increased convenience during the holiday period.

Meanwhile, traditional payment methods continued to lose ground:

Cheque payments totalled GH¢37.3 billion in December.
Electronic payment platforms such as GhIPSS Instant Pay recorded GH¢73.3 billion for the month.

The BoG noted that mobile money remains the dominant backbone of Ghana’s retail payments system. Seasonal spending patterns, rising smartphone penetration, and a rapidly growing agent network are expected to sustain strong growth into 2026 and beyond.
The record figures reinforce mobile money’s central role in everyday commerce, financial inclusion, and the broader digital economy in Ghana.
