Ministry Reaffirms Commitment to Empower Local Assemblies for Improved Water and Sanitation Services
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to improve water and sanitation services across the country.
Although 87.7 percent of households have access to basic drinking water services, significant disparities persist, with coverage standing at 96.4 percent in urban areas compared to 74.4 percent in rural communities.
Only 59.3 percent of households have access to improved toilet facilities, highlighting the need for accelerated investment in sanitation infrastructure, wastewater management and solid waste disposal.
The Ministry made the commitment in an August 10 circular as Ghana joins other African Union member states to mark the 2026 African Day for Decentralisation and Local Development.
This year’s commemoration is on the theme, “Empowered Local Governments for Sustainable Water and Sanitation: Advancing Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Cities and Territories towards Agenda 2063.”
The Ministry maintains that stronger local institutions, increased community participation and sustained partnerships are critical to addressing Ghana’s water and sanitation challenges and advancing sustainable development.
