Ministry of Education Strongly Condemns Student Violence in Central Region, Orders Immediate Probe

The Ministry of Education has issued a stern condemnation of acts of violence involving students from two schools in the Central Region, captured in viral videos circulating on social media.

In an official statement released on Monday, February 23, 2026, the Ministry described the incidents as unacceptable and contrary to the values of discipline, respect, and peaceful coexistence promoted in Ghanaian schools. Preliminary information confirms that the students featured in the footage are from institutions within the Central Region.

The Ministry has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Eric Nkansah, to launch a thorough investigation into the matter. A high-level meeting has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. today at GES headquarters in Accra, where Dr. Nkansah will convene with:

The Central Regional Director of Education

Relevant District Directors

Heads of the affected schools

The purpose of the meeting is to gather facts, review the circumstances surrounding the violence, and determine appropriate next steps.

While the investigation is underway, the Ministry emphasized that both Education Minister Hon. [Name – as per current administration] and sector leadership view the incident with the “utmost seriousness.” Authorities assured the public that the probe will be swift, transparent, and comprehensive.

The statement warned that any students, staff, or individuals found culpable will face strict disciplinary action in line with GES regulations and the Education Act. This may include suspension, expulsion, or referral to law enforcement where criminal elements are involved.

The condemnation follows a pattern of recent concerns over student misconduct and violence in schools, including previous incidents that prompted similar probes and warnings from the Ministry. Education authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining safe, conducive learning environments and urged parents, school heads, and communities to reinforce values of tolerance and non-violence among young people.

The Ministry appealed to the public to refrain from sharing unverified details or inflammatory commentary that could escalate tensions while investigations proceed. Further updates are expected following today’s meeting at GES headquarters.
