Ministry for the Interior Declares Friday, March 6, 2026, a Statutory Public Holiday for Independence Day

The Ministry for the Interior has officially reminded the general public that Friday, March 6, 2026, will be observed nationwide as a statutory public holiday in commemoration of Ghana’s Independence Day.

In a notice posted on the Ministry’s official Facebook page on Monday, March 2, the government confirmed that the day must be recognised and treated as a full public holiday across all regions, in line with national laws governing statutory holidays.

“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, March 6, 2026, marks Independence Day, which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement read.

The notice was signed by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP).

Independence Day marks the historic moment on March 6, 1957, when Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from British colonial rule. The occasion is traditionally celebrated with national parades, flag-raising ceremonies, cultural displays, speeches reflecting on the country’s democratic journey, and events honouring Ghana’s socio-economic progress and unity.

Government offices, public institutions, banks, and most private businesses are expected to close for the day, while essential services such as hospitals, security agencies, and selected utilities will continue operations as usual.

Citizens, organisations, and institutions are urged to observe the holiday in accordance with established regulations and to use the day for reflection, family time, and appreciation of Ghana’s journey since independence.

The Ministry encouraged Ghanaians to celebrate responsibly and to promote national unity and pride during the commemorations.

Further details on official Independence Day events and parades will be announced by the relevant state agencies in the coming days.
