Military Halts Accra Recruitment After Deadly Stampede Kills Six

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has put the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise in Greater Accra on ice after a deadly stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium claimed six lives and injured dozens on Wednesday morning.

Thousands of eager applicants stormed the gates before screening began, triggering chaos that crushed six young women and left others fighting for their lives at 37 Military Hospital.

In a swift response, GAF suspended the Accra leg “to implement additional safety measures and prevent any further incidents,” according to an official statement.

A Board of Inquiry has been set up to dig into what caused the tragedy and recommend fixes.

Meanwhile, recruitment in the other 15 regions rolls on as planned—no delays there. Applicants in Accra are told to stand by for updates on a safer restart.
