Mexican Actor Gerardo Taracena, Known for Apocalypto, Dies at 55

Gerardo Taracena, the acclaimed Mexican actor best remembered for his intense performance as Middle Eye in Mel Gibson’s 2006 film Apocalypto, has passed away at the age of 55.

His death was confirmed by Mexico’s National Association of Actors (ANDA) in an official statement, though no cause of death has been publicly disclosed.

Taracena built a respected career in Mexican cinema and television, appearing in notable projects such as The Mexican (2001), Man on Fire (2004), Salvando al Soldado Pérez (2011), and several telenovelas. However, his portrayal of the ruthless and scarred warrior Middle Eye in Apocalypto remains his most internationally recognized role, earning praise for its physicality and emotional depth in Gibson’s violent depiction of the declining Maya civilization.
