Massive Fire Guts Girls’ Dormitory at Northern School of Business, Displacing Nearly 900 Female Students

Close to 900 female students of the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) have been displaced after a devastating fire completely destroyed the school’s girls’ dormitory on Wednesday afternoon.

The dormitory, which accommodates students from four houses—Aggrey, Arthur, Ali, and Gbewaa—was reduced to ashes by the blaze.

Students who were in class at the time rushed back to the facility in desperate attempts to salvage their belongings, but the fire had already spread rapidly, consuming everything in its path.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service battled the inferno for several hours before bringing it under control.

Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in the incident.

The fire destroyed beds, mattresses, books, uniforms, clothing, and other personal effects belonging to the students, leaving many of the affected girls visibly distressed, traumatised, and without accommodation.

School authorities and the fire service are yet to determine the exact cause of the outbreak, though preliminary investigations are ongoing.

The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved fire safety infrastructure in educational institutions, particularly in boarding facilities housing large numbers of students.

The Northern School of Business and relevant authorities are expected to provide temporary accommodation and support for the displaced students while plans are made to reconstruct or rehabilitate the affected dormitory block.
