Manchester United Sack Ruben Amorim After 14 Months Amid Transfer Policy Row

Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge, bringing an end to his tenure following growing tensions with the club’s hierarchy over transfer policy.

The Portuguese coach departs Old Trafford after a power struggle with senior management, particularly regarding recruitment decisions. Amorim had publicly expressed frustration after Sunday’s Premier League draw against Leeds, insisting that the club’s recruitment department needed to “do their job.”

Amorim had believed the club was prepared to back him during the January transfer window if a major signing became available. However, he later revealed that no discussions had taken place regarding squad reinforcements, casting doubt on the level of support he was receiving.
Relations between Amorim and United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, are understood to have deteriorated significantly. Following the Leeds match, Amorim openly questioned his role at the club, stressing that he was hired to be Manchester United’s manager, not merely a coach, despite officially holding the title of head coach.

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United,” Amorim said. “I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes to replace me.”
United moved swiftly to end his tenure on Monday, releasing a statement confirming the decision.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly decided that now is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity to achieve the highest possible Premier League finish,” the statement said.
The club also thanked Amorim for his service and wished him well in his future career.

Sources close to the club indicate that United’s hierarchy was reluctant to approve the signings Amorim wanted for his preferred 3-4-3 system, amid concerns that those players may not suit a future head coach. Confidence in Amorim as a long-term solution reportedly waned as a result.

United’s leadership has maintained that Amorim was fully backed, pointing to an estimated £250 million spent on players since his appointment. The club insists his dismissal was based on a perceived lack of progress and evolution rather than a breakdown in support.
Manchester United are expected to announce interim arrangements while they search for a new head coach as the Premier League season continues.
